Description: This course will provide a structure within which graduation Masters students will be able to workshop, develop, and present a culminating project (academic study, performance piece, or a hybrid of the two). We will begin by examining some theoretical and practical propositions on the nature of interdisciplinary work and the relationship between performance and critical writing. We’ll consider them together, and workshop small groups will meet to reflect on how these propositions relate to the projects proposed by the members of each group.

We will also convene as a large group for four meetings in which faculty and advanced PhD students will present some of their own work. These panels are loosely arranged according to the “material” of the performances in question. For each panel, we will try to have one academic presentation, one performance, and one hybrid presentation (with the understanding that all of these are blurry categories). These panel presentations will give us an opportunity to experience different strategies that might be applicable to students’ own projects.
